Tanks for playingGenre: shooter - vertical
Publisher: Sega
Year: 1990
System: MD
Gameplay Score: 2
Gameplay Notes:
Slow movement and no weapons - only a couple of levels of powerup for your peashooter. One hit death and a large hitbox. Most enemies go down in one hit but larger tanks can take a lot of punishment. Far more difficult than the PCE version. I think the game speed is faster, which only accentuates your slow movement speed. I had a much harder time with this game.
Level Design Score: 3
Level Design Notes:
As average as the gameplay. The usual city, ocean, enemy base stages from all these WW2 shooters. Stages are incredibly long without clear breaks between them.
Theme Score: 4
Theme Notes:
I'm a sucker for these WW2 shooters. Having one set in Europe rather than the Pacific is a nice change of pace. Still, presentation is fairly low.
Art Style Score: 2
Art Style Notes:
Early gen, and it looks it. The same five enemies are recycled again and again. They look ok, but nearly all are tanks. Also, the screen is squished into the left 3/4 of the screen to preserve the original aspect ratio, I suppose. I prefer the full screen in the PCE version. Darker colors too.
Audio Score: 1
Audio Notes:
The soundtrack is better than the PCE version, but holy cow the sound effects are atrocious. They literally sound like someone banging on an aluminum pot. Horrible
