Dark Wizard
Fire Emblem with terrible graphicsGenre: strategy - turn-based tactics
Publisher: Sega
Year: 1993
System: Sega CD
Gameplay Score: 2
Gameplay Notes:
Straight up Fire Emblem clone, right down to permadeath, visiting towns and castles, and having one overpowered commander unit. Unfortunately, everything about the experience is second rate. Movement is clunky, controls are laggy, and long load times drag down the experience. The only damning critique of this game is the inconsistent damage given by units. It's feels like a roll of the dice if you'll give any damage at all.
Level Design Score: 3
Level Design Notes:
Again, it's a blatant clone of Fire Emblem so you should know what to expect here. Stages take a long time, as the enemy spawns units constantly. Otherwise it's standard stuff.
Theme Score: 3
Theme Notes:
Long and impressive cutscenes tell a generic story for each of the four playable commanders.
Art Style Score: 1
Art Style Notes:
Other than the cutscenes, this game looks horrible. The units have no detail whatsoever and don't even visually show whether they've completed their move for this turn. Battle animations are similarly disappointing, with a boring black background and stilted animation.
Audio Score: 3
Audio Notes:
I really like the music, but it restarts after every battle, every move, and every other menu, so all you'll ever hear are the first 6 notes. If the music tracks could play more continuously this would be a higher score.
Overall Score: 46
