Don Doko Don for PCE

Don Doko Don

Is that you Santa?

Genre: arcade - n/a

Publisher: Taito

Year: 1990

System: PCE

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

This is a blatant Bubble Booble or Rainbow Islands clone. Use a hammer to whack enemies, then pick them up to throw that at other enemies. Kill them all to finish the stage. Platforming is terrible, with you movement limited when jumping, ala Ice Climbers. Also, your hitbox is enormous, making it difficult to hit enemies without getting killed. Movement is imprecise as well. It's hard to position yourself just so, then make your jump upward to either attack or reach the next platform. It's not unplayable - I made it quite far in my time with it - but it doesn't feel great.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

There's some nice variety in enemy patterns and platforming sections. Sometimes enemy generators appear, or y'all columns of short platforms, or projectile throwing enemies. There's a lot going on to keep you on your toes.

Theme Score: 3

Theme Notes:

A short opening intro sets up the familiar damsel in distress plotline. In this case you're a white bearded gnome dressed in Santa red with a trusty mallet. It's cute.

Art Style Score: 2

Art Style Notes:

Basic graphics. Small sprites with only a couple of frames of animation. Charming but decidedly low fi.

Audio Score: 2

Audio Notes:

The one and only song isn't catchy but also isn't offensive.

Overall Score: 46
