Double Dragon II: The Revenge
NES > PCE CD > MDGenre: action - beat em up
Publisher: Naxat Soft
Year: 1993
System: PCE CD
Gameplay Score: 3
Gameplay Notes:
Massive improvement over the horrible Mega Drive version. That one was a port of the arcade game while this appears to be based on the far superior NES version. And I think I like this even more than the NES game. The biggest improvement are the responsive controls and the hit detection that actually, ya know, works. There's no hint of slowdown either. It features the same left and right attacks, using the 1 and 2 buttons. This means jumping is performed by pressing both together, again like the NES game. This results in a lot of button mashing but enemy AI is good and the moves are easy to execute. It's not in the upper echelon but it's not bad either.
Level Design Score: 4
Level Design Notes:
The highlight of this title. Fun elements like ladders, doors and helicopters keep things fresh. I have a few complaints, like a few too many cliffs you can fall off of but on the whole there's a lot more variety here than in most brawlers.
Theme Score: 4
Theme Notes:
It's Double Dragon, with some cutscenes.
Art Style Score: 3
Art Style Notes:
Colorful pixel art. The sprites are tall and lanky and ugly compared to the NES game, but vastly superior to the MD game.
Audio Score: 1
Audio Notes:
Terrible music that features a bunch of yells and screams, like it's a laugh track for a horror movie. Bizarre.
Overall Score: 62
