ESPN NBA Hangtime '95

Genre: sports - basketball

Publisher: Sony Imagesoft

Year: 1995

System: Sega CD

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

This wasn't the NBA Hangtime I thought I was getting into. Instead of Midway's NBA Jam sequel, this is a 2-v-2, halfcourt, pseudo-3D title that shares more DNA with Jordan vs Bird than NBA Jam. There's still a focus on slam dunks and flagrant fouls, but the realism is dialed up slightly. It's an even more repetitive and inconsistent experience than NBA Jam. Steals happen seemingly randomly, the AI is all too predictable, and you can't pump fake. There's not a lot of skill needed. Plus it's hard to know if you've passed the ball back far enough to "clear" the ball. Overall, it's servicable, but not much fun.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

Season and Exhibition mode. A few arena types, including outside.

Theme Score: 2

Theme Notes:

It's got the NBAPA license, so the real teams and players from my favorite era of NBA basketball. But the hip-hop music and ambiance is not my cup of tea.

Art Style Score: 1

Art Style Notes:

With only four sprites on screen I would've liked more detail. The sprites are small and poorly animated. Ugly

Audio Score: 1

Audio Notes:

I hate the hip hop music in this game. Sorry, not sorry.

Overall Score: 41
