Final Match Tennis for PCE

Final Match Tennis

Super Duper Tennis

Genre: sports - tennis

Publisher: Human

Year: 1991

System: PCE

Gameplay Score: 5

Gameplay Notes:

A Super Tennis rival! In fact, this one might play even better! Everything is excellent and reminiscent of ST, from the smooth movement to fast speed and spot-on physics. In fact, it's so similar that I suspect Human made both games. It's worth mentioning that a cutdown version of this game is also included in the "Human Sports Festival" on PCE-CD. It's called "Final Match Tennis Ladies" and has only ladies who are slower. This version is far superior.

Level Design Score: 4

Level Design Notes:

All the usual modes plus an excellent Training mode with configuration settings for whether your top or bottom of the screen, how fast the volleys are, whether they're random or sequential, and more. The only downside is that you can't mix and match girls and guys to adjust difficulty like you can in Super Tennis. Still, this is about as good as it gets in this genre.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

Purely arcade style sports game. The menus are attractive, simple, and load quickly. I love how quick and easy it is to jump into a match. The translation patch even adds players from the era, like Agassi, Borg, McEnroe, etc.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

Sprites are small but easy to look at. Animation is excellent and most importantly everything performs perfectly with no slowdown or framerate issues.

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

No music. Sound effects are closer to Atari noises than satisfying hits and bounces. The only bummer in this otherwise excellent package.

Overall Score: 88
