Honey on the Road

Frogger as a platformer

Genre: action - platform

Publisher: Face

Year: 1990

System: PCE

Gameplay Score: 4

Gameplay Notes:

Plays like Frogger. Four layers of platforms move independently. You can jump to avoid enemies or cross gaps and perform a jump attack or whatever power up you've acquired in that stage. Controls are tight although the jump and attack have a long animation that can't be interrupted so you better hope you timed it right. It's a twitchy platform experience that's more fun than I was expecting.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

The concept is initially intriguing but plays itself out before long. The only real variety between stages are the direction and speed of the four conveyor belt layers, plus the placement of enemies. After a handful of levels you've seen it all, even if the difficulty ramps up as you go.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

You plays as an, ahem, phallic potato in a crazy world filled with bizarre creatures. It's like if Kirby was a dong.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

Great sprites and colorful animations and effects like the moving platforms. Lord to see and keep track of.

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

Fun tunes but weak sounds

Overall Score: 73
