Image Fight
Vertical R-TypeGenre: shooter - vertical
Publisher: Irem
Year: 1990
System: PCE
Gameplay Score: 4
Gameplay Notes:
A unique powerup system. Your gun is never upgraded but you can collect up to three options and a secondary weapon which also acts as a forward add-on that's similar to the R-Type "force", except for the fact that it isn't invincible. The options come in two varieties - pointed straight forward, or away from the direction you most recently moved. This allows for strategic planning and replayability. Four speeds can be toggled between.
Level Design Score: 4
Level Design Notes:
I want to put this higher, since the stages remind me of R-Type. Lots of environmental hazards and branching routes that can result in overwhelming enemy fire coming from behind. Tons of variety in enemy placement and obstacles. Things feel fresh all the time.
Theme Score: 5
Theme Notes:
The short intro and between-stage screens give off a cool vibe.
Art Style Score: 4
Art Style Notes:
It's an early title but it looks solid. Great pixel art, even if the backgrounds are a tad boring.
Audio Score: 3
Audio Notes:
Good chiptune music, but not as epic as Irem's other games.
Overall Score: 79
