Lunar - The Silver Star
Moon that starGenre: rpg - japanese
Publisher: Working Designs
Year: 1993
System: Sega CD
Gameplay Score: 4
Gameplay Notes:
Fast movement Normal HP and MP and other stats, but the number of attacks and number of moves can also increase. Each turn you can attack multiple times. Like Chrono Trigger, position on the battle field dictates which target you and enemies will attack. Auto battle. Other QoL improvements include remembering your last cursor placement, save (almost) anywhere, and a companion to advise you during battles. Oh and plentiful restore HP/MP spots in the early game. My main gripe is that battles mostly involve only the main character since he starts at the front of the formation, which can't be changed. He delivers most of the damage and takes most of the damage. Every battle winds up the same - he attacks, the girl heals, and the other kid does nothing or gets a hit in before the fight is over. Another complaints is the unintelligible equip menu. It features tiny icons for all items with no names or stats. Have to guess which is best. Inventory management is overall a negative, since you have a small bag to carry all items, but at least it's shared by all party members.
Level Design Score: 3
Level Design Notes:
Linear. Almost immediately have a 3 person party. Hard to trigger certain story beats. I got stuck numerous times, even after doing exactly what I was told to do. Turns out I had to talk to the same NPC multiple times or talk to someone else. Pretty annoying.
Theme Score: 3
Theme Notes:
Only three playable characters. Working Design's juvenile humor. Low stakes story - just a kid who wants to leave town and has a vague desire to go on "adventures". Animated cutscenes do a lot of heavy lifting, but even with those I don't feel much motivation.
Art Style Score: 3
Art Style Notes:
Dark graphics. Tiny sprites. Minimal detail. Same sprites on overview and in battle.
Audio Score: 5
Audio Notes:
Outstanding music. Sounds effects are barely there but the soundtrack makes up for it. Voice acting is hammy but fun and excellent quality.
Overall Score: 74
