Madou Monogatari I - 3tsu no Madoukyuu

Kindergarten Dungeon Quest

Genre: rpg - dungeon

Publisher: Sega

Year: 1993

System: MD

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

Really strange mechanics, similar to the Super Famicom version. The only numeric value shown is the amount of money you have. Health is only indicated by your character's facial expressions and some text that says things like "oh I'm in trouble", "I don't feel good". It's extremely weird. The game plays quickly, without much lag or delay. Unlike the SFC version, this one plays as a dungeon crawler but switches to a side view, just like the other version. The dungeon crawling works pretty darn well due to an auto-map that's accessible by pressing C. Battles are strange, requiring you to enter a SF2 set of inputs to fire elemental magic attacks. I can't find a way to defend. It's like playing Final Fantasy VI with only Sabin in your party and only Blitz attacks available.

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

The world is very linear, like all dungeon crawlers seem to be. You begin in a small floor of a tower with locked doors and all the usual trappings. The dungeons feel empty and samey everywhere you go, but the map makes them easy enough to traverse.

Theme Score: 1

Theme Notes:

Same as the Super Famicom version. You're a kindergartner at a magic school! So, if Harry Potter had started 6 years earlier. No thanks.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

It's overly cute but the graphics are undeniably well drawn. Enemy designs are lifted directly from the Puyo Puyo games, which I think is the case given that this is made by Compile. The dungeons have little to no personality but the sprite work here is excellent.

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

I'm not too keen on the music, even though it's well made. There are a ton of voice samples which are juvenile and annoying.

Overall Score: 45
