Mizubaku Daibouken

Kirby's Wet Ride

Genre: action - platform

Publisher: Taito

Year: 1992

System: PCE

Gameplay Score: 4

Gameplay Notes:

I've got complaints, but this is a great game. Well, a fun one anyway. It's devilishly difficult because two factors - hitboxes and health. You die in a single hit while enemies often take many. You attack with a thrown ball of water that bounces around like the star in Gimmick. It's an unreliable projectile that's often frustrating. Hitboxes are maddeningly small and confusing. Enemies might have a tiny hitbox in only a small part of their body. Bosses are the worst offenders, due to their size, but all enemies and you have unusual, illogical hitboxes. Movement is slow but predictable and feels like a Kirby game.

Level Design Score: 4

Level Design Notes:

Stages are long and feature tricky platforming and cheap enemy placement, but are engaging. Many platforms are hard to identify as well. But the variety and creativity on display is unquestionable.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

Straight up Kirby clone. Your sprite is a blob with ginormous eyes and enemies are cute but sometimes confusing and hard to pick out from the colorful backgrounds.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

Sickeningly sweet artwork. Again, the Kirby comparison can't be overstated. This IS a Kirby game.

Audio Score: 4

Audio Notes:

The first two stages have ho hum music but the soundtrack improves the further you go. Sound effects are also pleasant.

Overall Score: 80
