NBA Jam
Sounds great. But those load times, yeeshGenre: sports - basketball
Publisher: Acclaim
Year: 1994
System: Sega CD
Gameplay Score: 3
Gameplay Notes:
Plyas just like the SNES and Genesis versions, but with extra long load times that hurt the pick up and playability of this version. Floaty, imprecise controls. This is a three button game and the massive buttons on the Genesis controller make it hard to play. Getting "on fire" is a ton of fun, so long as it's not done against you. 2v2 gameplay so it's easy to keep track of what's happening on the court. Ball tends to fly way above the court making it nerly impossible to tell where it is in the depth of field. Hard to get rebounds. More a game of luck than skill as steals and blocks are a crapshoot. Gameplay is not deep. Fun for about 5 minutes at a time but no more.
Level Design Score: 2
Level Design Notes:
Simple arcade modes - single game or a never-ending tournament.
Theme Score: 3
Theme Notes:
NBA and NBAPA but only two players per team. The arcade motif is nice but exaggerated and again gets old rather quickly.
Art Style Score: 3
Art Style Notes:
Colorful and runs smoothly but animation seems a step behind the SNES version. The on fire effects and whatnot are also worse here.
Audio Score: 4
Audio Notes:
Fantastic sound, especailly the voice announcer. Sounds just like you remember the arcade sounding. The music is, and always was, bad, but at least it's crystal clear.
Overall Score: 57
