Ninja Ryuukenden for PCE

Ninja Ryuukenden

Why can't they get the music right?

Genre: action - hack n slash

Publisher: Hudson Soft

Year: 1992

System: PCE

Gameplay Score: 4

Gameplay Notes:

This classic NES game controls as well as it ever did. some of the mechanics feel dated, like enemies spawning just as you you kill them, but this game feels very good. One complaint is the I couldn't jump up on to a ledge with a quick left and right while grappling. I can do this on the NES but it doesn't seem to work here.

Level Design Score: 4

Level Design Notes:

Memorize the enemy placement. Tough but fair

Theme Score: 5

Theme Notes:

Ninja Gaiden!

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

In some ways this is a better visual improvement than the Ninja Gaiden Trilogy. The sprites look about the same but some of the backgrounds have far more detail. Scrolling in the first stage is an unbelievable eyesore! The city skyline appears to scroll backward as you move. It's hideous!

Audio Score: 2

Audio Notes:

As in NG Trilogy, the music is far worse than the NES originals. A few compositions sound similar but many are unrecognizable. Sound effects are so loud they drown out music

Overall Score: 75
