Osomatsu-kun Hachamecha Gekijou

Genre: action - platform

Publisher: Sega

Year: 1988

System: MD

Gameplay Score: 1

Gameplay Notes:

Floaty, slow controls. Only attack is a short range slingshot. The distance increases slightly more after each boss is defeated but it's power never does. Most enemies take 2 or more hits and don't stop when hit so they will truck emright through you if you don't start hitting them immediately. That's the main challenge of the game. The platforming is simple because you have a tall jump but the enemies send so many projectiles that if you don't kill them quickly they become impossible to get past. There are shops to buy special items but it's confusing to use them.

Level Design Score: 1

Level Design Notes:

The stages are divided into a confusing maze of interconnected areas which are usually only a few screens wide. The paths branch in a variety of different ways and this inconsistency makes it impossible to know what's going to trigger one or what you should avoid. Some even take you back several stages. So annoying and convoluted.

Theme Score: 3

Theme Notes:

Weird weird weird Japanese comedy stuff. I have no idea what's going on and I love it.

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

Cute but simple sprites with minimal animation. The backgrounds though! They can be crazy. The flashy sunset is fun.

Audio Score: 2

Audio Notes:

At first I liked the music but I started to detest it the longer I played.

Overall Score: 28
