Gameplay Score: 3
Gameplay Notes:
What a revelation! The overall score doesn't reflect this, but this is a nearly perfect 16-bit soccer game. It has good looks, tight controls (with a massive caveat I'll discuss later), and a fast pace. Plus dumb opponents and mercifully low difficulty options for simpletons like me. My only complaint is that your player comes to a complete stop when kicking, passing, or receiving a ball, which makes it nigh impossible to set up a good pass and shoot play. Everything else about the gameplay is a solid 5 out of 5, but this one annoying mechanic drops it way down in playability. What a shame!
Level Design Score: 2
Level Design Notes:
All the usual modes, but with it all wrapped in kanji characters, it's not very approachable.
Theme Score: 2
Theme Notes:
If the menus were in English I'd bump this clear up to a 4, because this game oozes style
Art Style Score: 4
Art Style Notes:
Nice looking sprites that animate and perform admirably. The entire thing looks and feels fluid. The Mega Drive excelled at sports titles, didn't it?
Audio Score: 4
Audio Notes:
The music has no business going as hard as it does.
