Psy-O-Blade
Interstellar pixel huntGenre: adventure - point n click
Publisher: Sigma
Year: 1990
System: MD
Gameplay Score: 2
Gameplay Notes:
This is a visual novel with minimal interactivity. It's a "find the pixel" sort of game with no visual indicator to show you what can be or should be clicked. The cursor moves a little too fast which makes it hard to select the tiny objects in the tiny viewport. Pressing C interacts with whatever you've highlighted while A opens a menu to allow navigation, aka "MOVE". It all makes sense but selecting the right object on screen is not easy to do.
Level Design Score: 1
Level Design Notes:
You can move between 13 rooms in a derelict spaceship. There's very little freedom in the early game as you have to trigger a certain series of events. I suspect the entire game is like this. It's like watching a movie but needing to click on a certain spot on the screen to advance to the next scene. Not fun.
Theme Score: 5
Theme Notes:
I LOVE the hard sci-fi setting. It's a near future setting with a spaceship returning from mankind's first interstellar journey. The atmosphere within the seemingly derelict spaceship give me serious Aliens and Event Horizon vibes, with a touch of Japanese teenage angst.
Art Style Score: 3
Art Style Notes:
The artwork is well drawn but the viewport is TINY! It's no more than 20% of the screen. This severely hampers my enjoyment as well as the gameplay itself.
Audio Score: 4
Audio Notes:
I enjoy the atmospheric music which changes according to the on screen goings on.
Overall Score: 44
