Rise of the Dragon
Don't call me Blade RunnerGenre: adventure - point n click
Publisher: Sega
Year: 1992
System: Sega CD
Gameplay Score: 3
Gameplay Notes:
Simple controls, for the most part. There are some not obvious actions to take but I'll address those in the level design category. C interacts and A opens inventory while B cancels or closes things. It's not always obvious what can be it interacted with so most screens require a careful sweep of the viewable area. Thankfully the cursor changes to indicate interactivity. Thank you
Level Design Score: 3
Level Design Notes:
Time passes as you play so you need to promptly move to the next area to gather evidence. This is a detective story, after all. Dialogue often appears, giving you some autonomy, but most wrong choice lead to game over so the game amounts to a long series of right answers to be memorized. It's easy to traverse between areas and find your way around the world.
Theme Score: 3
Theme Notes:
Discount Blade Runner. The mayor's daughter OD'd on a horrible new drug and the Marie has talked you to investigate. Some shadowy super villain seems to be behind the mystery. There's a fair amount of language.
Art Style Score: 4
Art Style Notes:
Cutscenes have tiny artwork, for no apparent reason. But the rest of the artwork is big, bold, and dynamic with a ton of animation and personality. It's a grim, grimey setting, so the world itself is purposely ugly, but it undoubtedly impressive.
Audio Score: 4
Audio Notes:
Good music matches the noir setting. Voice acting is over the top but enjoyable. Plus I'm almost positive that the voice of Babs Bunny plays your girlfriend Karyn.
