Mech Ninja WarriorGenre: shooter - vertical
Publisher: Tengen
Year: 1993
System: Sega CD
Gameplay Score: 3
Gameplay Notes:
How hum. Adjustable speed is nice and having four weapons is also good, although the chaser and laser are the only two worth using. They can powered up three times but there are no sub weapons or screen clearing bombs. You've got a huge hitbox and taking damage feels inconsistent.
Level Design Score: 3
Level Design Notes:
Only a few stages are any good. I initially liked the train chase, but it turned out to be one of the most monotonous stages ever. Some variety in enemy movement but they get repeated so much that boredom sets in. Not Compile's best effort.
Theme Score: 5
Theme Notes:
Alt history where steam powered mechs are used in feudal Japan. Dialogue between stages and a fully-voiced intro cinematic set quite the stage. Who doesn't want to play as a Ninja Mech warrior?
Art Style Score: 4
Art Style Notes:
Drab colors hold back an otherwise impressive looking game. The color scheme makes it near impossible to spot projectiles which leads to cheap deaths. Excellent enemy designs almost make up for it all.
Audio Score: 2
Audio Notes:
Good music - tho nothing to write home about - is offset by loud and constant sound effects. My favorite weapon plays a continuous high pitched squeal that caused me to turn the volume way down.
