Ryuuko no Ken
The zoom is brokenGenre: fighting - 1v1
Publisher: Hudson Soft
Year: 1994
System: PCE CD
Gameplay Score: 3
Gameplay Notes:
Standard SFII clone right down to having Ryu (Ryo) and Ken (Carlos) clones. Controls ok although special moves are hard to pull off. Only two buttons for the most part - punch and kick. The L and R buttons do weird stuff. Sometimes they blast the guy in front of you while other times they kick behind you. Why would I ever want to kick behind me when I'm always facing my opponent? 8 fighters but only two can be played in story mode.
Level Design Score: 4
Level Design Notes:
Standard 3 round fights but can be made 1 round in the options. Can also turn off time limit and dial down the difficulty to dumb as a box of rocks which is just my speed.
Theme Score: 2
Theme Notes:
Dumb damsel in distress storyline. Each fight starts and ends with a little dialogue but it's all formulaic at best. Completely unforgettable stuff. This might be the only fighting game without a female character. There's an androgenous one named King so maybe that counts?
Art Style Score: 3
Art Style Notes:
Nice animation. Huge sprites. Backgrounds have a bit of animation but are not memorable. The camera zooming doesn't work at all. This was done way better in the SNES and even Genesis versions. In this version the entire screen wipes instead of a smooth transition. It's jarring.
Audio Score: 3
Audio Notes:
Standard stuff. Not bad
