Super Skidmarks

Super Mini Cooper Off Road

Genre: racing - overhead

Publisher: Codemasters

Year: 1995

System: MD PAL

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

I really want to like this game, but the controls are so squirrely. Actually, they're slippery as an eel. I like what the devs were trying to do but I feel like my car is out of control at all times. I gave up trying to make tight turns and instead used the walls as bumpers like it's a pinball machine. The other problem is that with 5 other racers, small tracks, and narrow roads, you bump into each. A LOT. In fact, the game always puts you at the back of the pack to begin each race so the main challenge in the game is to deal with the other racers, PvP style. Another complaint is the lack of cusotmization. There are no pickups and you don't earn money to spend on upgrades.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

The tracks themselves are awesome. There's a practice mode and the standard championship mode. You can pick from 4 different cups, each with a handful of races. There are four different car types, although they control identically.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

Not much personality. It has a realistic look and feel to it, like the races are happening in a real place. Tiny NPC crowds watch you race and little billboards and other real world details are everywhere. I like those little touches.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

I love the zoomed out view and small, well-animated sprites. The tracks have a ton of interesting details and also look great.

Audio Score: 2

Audio Notes:

Twangy music isn't my groove at all. Sound effects are fine but there are only two of them - a crunch when you crash into a wall or another car, and tires squealing as you round a corner. This, despite the fact that the ground is always dirt, sand, or snow. Why are my wheels squealing, exactly?

Overall Score: 61
