Tomcat Alley

Bottom Gun

Genre: shooter - gallery

Publisher: Sega

Year: 1994

System: Sega CD

Gameplay Score: 1

Gameplay Notes:

As is the case with all of these "Full-Screen Interactive Movies" thre's precious little you can do here, but it's more than most. You aim your familiar reticle (which bobs around like you're drunk) and either fire a missile at a target, or select waypoints which take you to the next target. You can also choose between a couple of different weapons and switch between Air or Ground mode. So there you go, that's the "extra" interactivity that this game offers versus all the other interactive movie gallery shooters. The main problem here is the imprecise aiming reticle. Locking on to your target can be quite annoying. And miss and you'll run out of missiles and/or fuel.

Level Design Score: 1

Level Design Notes:

This is a movie, first and foremost. The "levels" amount to knowing which missile and mode to choose and then hoping that you can lock on to the planes that are moving way too fast on the screen.Again, it's terribel, but better than many of these FMV shooters.

Theme Score: 2

Theme Notes:

This movie really wants to be Top Gun. A corny, pretentious, nonsensical, embarassing facsimile of Top Gun.

Art Style Score: 1

Art Style Notes:

It's full screen, but the video quality is atrocious. The only saving grace here is the clear visual language showing targets to select.

Audio Score: 0

Audio Notes:

The sound effects are repetitive and annoying, but this game's greatest sound problem happens during the cutscenes. The voice track is quiet and gets completely muffled when the music track gets loud, making the dialogue hard to hear.

Overall Score: 19
