Valis III
The Castlevania oneGenre: action - hack n slash
Publisher: NEC
Year: 1992
System: TG-16 CD
Gameplay Score: 3
Gameplay Notes:
Major upgrade over the Genesis version. Faster movement, easier platforming, better hit detection, improved draw distance, etc. This is easily the definitive version of this game. There are two playable characters in the new one uses a whip like a Belmont. The second level even has a ferryman sequence similar to Castlevania 2. You can switch between the two at any time, ala Portrait of Ruin. It takes several seconds to switch, however.
Level Design Score: 3
Level Design Notes:
Much better level design than the other two Valis games. There's some vertical sequences and just more variety in the levels.
Theme Score: 4
Theme Notes:
Almost identical to the previous game but The addition of a second player gives the game a little more character. The cutscenes have voiced dialogue but man are they slow.
Art Style Score: 3
Art Style Notes:
Greatly improved visuals, especially in the backgrounds. The sprites are also a major upgrade over the hunchback in the previous game. No parallax scrolling, unfortunately. Despite looking better than previous games it's still not great, especially when compared to standouts of this generation.
Audio Score: 4
Audio Notes:
Fantastic music. I wish there was a sound test.
Overall Score: 63
