XDR - X-Dazedly-Ray

Pew pew. Tap tap. Pop.

Genre: shooter - horizontal

Publisher: Unipacc

Year: 1990

System: MD

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

I'm tempted to score it higher, but the extreme difficulty holds it back. Movement is responsive but there are only two weapons with a couple of powerups, including up to two trailing options, ala Gradius. Powerups are few and far between though. It reminds me of Aero Blasters, with it's thin sprites that are hard to shoot with your equally narrow shots. Overall it feels just ok

Level Design Score: 4

Level Design Notes:

Good variety in enemies, enemy waves, and environmental hazards. The stages each have a distinct look as well. It begins flying over a cityscape, as per usual, and then moves underground and into other familiar biomes. Still, it's more than just a repeating slog like so many of its peers.

Theme Score: 3

Theme Notes:

Generic. There's no cutscenes or story.

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

Nothing spectacular. Sprites are well drawn and colorful, although they look rather flat, without much shading. The backgrounds are also colorful and varied, but repetitive and lacking any animation or parallax.

Audio Score: 2

Audio Notes:

I like the music, although it's thin, without any bass. The sounds, on the other had, are laugh out loud poor quality. They're the wimpiest set of noises! Your spread weaopn sounds like someone tapping a plastic fork on a kitchen counter. Bosses die in a fiery explosion that sounds like a two finger clap. And when you die it's to the tune of a bubble gum pop. These are the least satisfying sounds ever. If I ever come back to this game it will be to hear the sound effects.

Overall Score: 63
