Youkai Douchuuki
Ghouls 'n Ghosts with one lifeGenre: action - gun
Publisher: Namco
Year: 1988
System: PCE
Gameplay Score: 1
Gameplay Notes:
This could've been a decent game, but falls flat in almost every aspect of its gameplay. The controls themselves are responsive and pleasant. Mega Man this ain't, but jumping and shooting work just fine. My only complaint about the gunplay is that if you fire rapidly your shot flies back and circles around your sprite, for no real reason and to no advantage either. So you have to carefully fire individual shots. Enemies are weird - most die in one hit but others take dozens of hits. Others can't be killed at all. Of those, some can be jumped on like they're a platform but other invincible foes deal damage. It's random. Lastly, this is an insanely difficult game. You only have one life and, as near as I can tell, there's no way to restore health. Inexcusable.
Level Design Score: 1
Level Design Notes:
Some light platforming, but there's not much to the level design. Go to the right. No verticality.
Theme Score: 2
Theme Notes:
This is one of the many titles with an ancient Japanese demon folklore setting. You're a squat little kid killing demons and frogs. Ho hum
Art Style Score: 1
Art Style Notes:
Looks like an 8-bit port of a 1987 arcade game. Oh wait, it is. Despite its simplicity the artwork is charming. However, the viewport only uses the bottom half of the screen. The top half features a massive HUD with an awesome minimal which shows your progress.
Audio Score: 2
Audio Notes:
Standard Japanese folk music with the beeps and bops of Namco's 80s titles.
