International Tennis Tour

A good tennis game? This isn't ITT

Genre: sports - tennis

Publisher: Taito

Year: 1993

System: SNES

Gameplay Score: 1

Gameplay Notes:

Ball moves insanely slow. Several times I wiffed on a ball bit had time to run after it and hit it. So yeah I guess you run faster than the ball. Camera is nauseating. It pans with every slight movement you make. If it weren't for this the GE would be ok but the camera completely ruins it. The view is a little too low. Not as low as David Crane but close. This makes depth perception exceedingly difficult. Serving is also weird. You have to swing much earlier than you would expect to. Oh and there are three different hits that have a different speed. Kind of like Street Fighter 2 attacks. A is soft, B is medium, and Y is hit it out of bounds. Seriously, no matter what I do Y always hits the ball out of the court. Why is it even there? X is a loft shot but I found no use for it.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

All the usual modes as well as a training mode. It also includes a Championship mode where you can save your progress over a multi week campaign to become the number 1 player. Ambitious

Theme Score: 3

Theme Notes:

Very arcadey menu. Looks and feels cartoony. I like it let's you jump right in.

Art Style Score: 2

Art Style Notes:

Great use of color. The menu is inexplicably dark but the court looks nice with a ton of fans in the stands. The sprites look like bodybuilders. They remind me of Metal Slug sprites. Also there are no female characters which I found odd. The real problem with the graphics isn't the artwork, but the field of vision. It's too low so scaling and depth perception are awful.

Audio Score: 1

Audio Notes:

An announcer with a Japanese accent gives the score before every serve. Pretty annoying. There's no music other than the menu song which is...weird. Sounds are ok I guess

Overall Score: 34
