Daze Before Christmas

He sees you when you're sleeping

Genre: action - platform

Publisher: Sunsoft

Year: 1994

System: SNES PAL

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

Looks and feels like Adventures of Yogi Bear. You can jump and fire a projectile that turns enemies into collectable presents which give you points and are used in a flying section where you drop those presents down smokey chimneys. Gameplay is extremely simple, with the only wrinkle being an invincibility powerup called Anti-Claus which lets you swing your sack rather than throwing your magic dust projectile. Control is mostly responsive, although your momentum can be slowed but not reversed after jumping, so you need to carefully cnosider each jump. Extremely easy game. All enemies die in a single shot and platforming is very easy in the early game and never gets truly challenging. Perfect difficulty for the very young audience it was intended for.

Level Design Score: 4

Level Design Notes:

Fantastic variety throughout. 24 levels segmented into groups of eight - six platformer, one boss fight, and one flying level.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

Play as Santa Claus!! Santa's lore is played with in fun ways and your enemies include an evil Snowman, Clock, Mouse, and an angry rain cloud named Mr. Weather. Campy but fun. Horrible translation. I love it.

Art Style Score: 5

Art Style Notes:

Incredible artwork. Simply astounding. I was constantly marverling at the animations of sprites and foreground elements. I hung out on the conveyor belts for a long time just to admire the incredible animation. Some areas feature drab colors, but overall this is an amazing looking 16-bit title.

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

A handful of excellent songs along with a fwe duds. There's a somber song that I erally enjoyed, while the most upbeat one droned on too long. Good sound design overall.

Overall Score: 70
