Joe Montana's NFL Football for Sega CD
Review #12055
Joe Montana's NFL Football
Joe's defected to the Chiefs
Gameplay
Slow, laggy controls and menus. The menus feel like you're using a smart TV from 2015. Gameplay is slow, although this plays to your advantage since you can take time to find an open receiver or a hole to run through. Physics feels ok when running but collision feels bizarre. Overall it feels like a so-bad-it's-good football experience, like ABC Monday Night on the SNES.
Level Design
Only exhibition and season modes and Rookie, Normal, and Pro difficult levels. The only other configuration option is the game length, with 20, 40, and 60 being your only options. Even at 20 this makes each game super long.
Theme
NFL but no NFLPA licenses. Other than the NFL crest plastered over half the screen, the presentation is sorely lacking.
Art Style
Horrible graphics, especially as sprites scale into the background. Makes it extremely difficult to find an open receiver. A low framerate is the weakest aspects of this game.
Audio
Good sound quality of the play-by-play announcer. He only speaks on the menu but sounds great. Crowd noise is fine, but all in-game menus are dead silent, which is jarring.
