OutRun for PCE
Review #8098
OutRun
Genre defining, but creaky
Gameplay
As someone who holds no nostalgia for this game, I came away unimpressed. It's repetitive and has very limited gameplay. It plays faster than the Genesis version and other cars have almost no collision, so you'll crash and slow down far less than in other versions. Still a subpar racing experience.
Level Design
Has hills and tons of backgrounds to give you something to look at.
Branching paths
Theme
The passengers in your Ferrari give this game its identity. Their reactions are fun.
Most racing games feel like a chore but this one feels like a fun Sunday drive.
Art Style
Mixed bag. The sprites and animations are fun, especially the wipeout animation. That wipeout is missing the driver and passenger sprites though! The game performs better than the Genesis version in some ways (more speed!) but other things look far worse, such as the branching paths which flash like a strobelight.
Audio
I've heard that the music is this game's defining feature so my hopes were high. None of the songs were catchy and they were surprisingly quiet. Still, the overall design of sounds and music was good, but not great.
