Snatcher for Sega CD

Snatcher

The most Blade Runnerest Blader Runner to ever Blade Run

Genre: adventure - point n click

Publisher: Konami

Year: 1994

System: Sega CD

Gameplay Score: 4

Gameplay Notes:

Everything is controlled via a text menu. I love not having a cursor! No find the pixel gameplay here - just go to a room and LOOK, INVESTIGATE, LISTEN and otherwise examine the contents of that space without much fuss. I love the simplicity. At various moments you engage in combat by playing a shooting game. You can move your cursor in eight directions to fire at that square. Imagine the screen is split into a 3x3 grid, like the Brady Bunch title screen.

Level Design Score: 4

Level Design Notes:

Seems linear in the early game. There are no time constraints so you can fully explore to whatever depth you'd like. Checking things multiple times provide extra responses. It feels like an interactive anime movie.

Theme Score: 5

Theme Notes:

Yes it's a Blade Runner rip-off, but it has a ton of personality. It doesn't take itself as serious as BR or Rise of the Dragon. There's a lot of humor, fourth wall breaking, and clever cultural nods. I've heard about this game for a long time but I only now understand why it's a classic.

Art Style Score: 5

Art Style Notes:

Insanely good art direction. It's as good as any anime. Amazing use of color and pixel art. Tons of animation. Scenes are cinematic.

Audio Score: 4

Audio Notes:

Fantastic voice acting. Music is good but loops so quickly that it gets annoying.

Overall Score: 83
