Chuck Rock's Road RashGenre: racing - vehicle combat
Publisher: Core Design
Year: 1994
System: Sega CD
Gameplay Score: 2
Gameplay Notes:
Ostensibly a Mario Kart clone, but plays more like Road Rash. Your only means of attack is to punch/kick to your right or left, ala RR. The only MK similarity is the small tracks and multiple lap structure. Controls are fine, but with so little going on there's almost no dynamism. This leads to a stagnant, boring experience. Even the fighting mechanic is not done well because hitting an enemy seems to slow you down more than it does them. It's best to focus exclusively on driving.
Level Design Score: 2
Level Design Notes:
I didn't see all the tracks, but with no verticality and no power-ups, boosters, or anything else to add variety, I was unimpressed with those that I saw. You can make even 90 degree turns without letting up on the gas, so the tracks amount to just a series of lefts and rights. Ho hum
Theme Score: 2
Theme Notes:
Chuck Rock and five other Flintstones wannabes. Lame
Art Style Score: 2
Art Style Notes:
Sprites are a jumbled mess. I didn't realize Chuck Rock was in the game until I saw his name. The tracks are also unattractive, with terrible scaling and a mess of pixelated blacks and browns. Also, the bottom third of the screen is wasted on a useless HUD that provides nothing of value. It doesn't even show a map.
Audio Score: 1
Audio Notes:
The music leans heavily into a bones and drums motif with no discernable composition. It's just an incessant drum beat. The sounds are a predictable cacophony of grunts and bumps.
