Builder Land for PCE CD

Builder Land

Genre: puzzle - platform

Publisher: Micro World

Year: 1992

System: PCE CD

Gameplay Score: 1

Gameplay Notes:

Plays a lot like Eek the Cat or Rocko's Modern Life. You escort a little guy who walks across the screen. You can stop time and grab certain blocks and move them elsewhere. The rules are that you can't place a block on or above the kid (he'll die) and you can't move the block while he's standing on it. Problem is, he is only one block from the far left of the screen so you barely have time to grab the block he's just walked off of before it's lost off screen. You can stop time to gain ample time to move blocks around but the level timer doesn't stop. Controlwise the cursor is somewhat slow and doesn't indicate when things are selectable so there's a fair amount of guesswork. The controls aren't all that bad but the clock and screen scrolling make this game almost unplayable.

Level Design Score: 0

Level Design Notes:

I hate this game. I couldn't beat the first stage. It goes on and on and I swear it requires you to carry with you every single movable block you ever encounter despite not giving you anywhere near enough time to do so. Go to heck ya little devil.

Theme Score: 1

Theme Notes:

What even is this theme? It looks like a pre-K edutainment game but is harder than 90+% of the puzzlers out there.

Art Style Score: 1

Art Style Notes:

Hideous. It's colorful and reminds me of Blue's Journey for the NeoGeo, albeit with an early DOS-level of detail.

Audio Score: 2

Audio Notes:

CD quality whimsical songs for the theme but not the devilish difficulty.

Overall Score: 17
