Dungeon Explorer II
More of the same, with barely audible musicGenre: adventure - overhead
Publisher: TTI
Year: 1993
System: TG-16 CD
Gameplay Score: 3
Gameplay Notes:
Sequel of Dungeon Explorer, which I liked. Enemies pour out of generators just like in Gauntlet or Soul Blazer. Gameplay is extremely simple, but enjoyable. Just aim at the generators and shoot em dead. Eight playable characters gives the appearance of variety but they all play exactly the same so it's purely cosmetic. But still appreciated! It's a fun but hollow experience. I liked the SFC version more, but this one is perfectly fine.
Level Design Score: 4
Level Design Notes:
I like the hub and spoke level design, where you play through a short dungeon, beat the boss, and then fast travel to the next area or any previous area, including the home base castle. The dungeons are very short and follow a linear path. There are no puzzles or backtracking - just plow through to the end.
Theme Score: 4
Theme Notes:
Not much of a storyline other than "go questing for the king". Standard stuff. However, the town has a bunch of NPCs to talk to and the large number of playable characters gives this game some personality.
Art Style Score: 3
Art Style Notes:
Looks just like the TG16 prequel. Not impressive.
Audio Score: 3
Audio Notes:
The soundtrack is nice but is barely audible. The sound effects drown it out completely.
