Fushigi no Yume no Alice

Alice in need agility

Genre: action - platform

Publisher: Face

Year: 1990

System: PCE

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

Far more difficult than you'd think. You've only got three hearts of health and enemies love to get inside your sprite and kill you quickly. You can bounce on them or shoot at them but your projectile is much weaker than a bop and thus is only useful on the weakest enemies. Bopping is challenging because enemies are far more agile than you. That's the biggest problem here - the float, slippery, momentum-based and slow turning controls. Turning around takes a good second to show the full animation and face the opposite direction. This feels so out of place in a platformer with tight jumps and agile enemies. I'm being generous with this score because there's a lot to like, but the controls make this game a chore to play.

Level Design Score: 4

Level Design Notes:

Great level design, even if the controls make many of the rooms challenging to traverse. Feels like a Mega Man game, with discreet rooms and level segments that you scroll up, down, or sideways into.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

Alice in Wonderland. Plays it straight as a platformer, with Alice-coded enemies and other elements.

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

Pretty basic. Maybe a slight step up from an NES game, but not too far. The bosses are a highlight.

Audio Score: 4

Audio Notes:

Decent music but not as whimsical as I expected from an Alice-themed title. Still, I enjoyed the sounds.

Overall Score: 58
