Heavy Unit - Mega Drive Special

Massive upgrade over the PCE version

Genre: shooter - horizontal

Publisher: Toho

Year: 1990

System: MD

Gameplay Score: 4

Gameplay Notes:

Huge improvement over the PC Engine version which was plagued by weak weapons and slow movement. This one fixes most of the complains I had with the first game. Speed is much better and speed powerups are plentiful. Enemies aren't damage sponges as much, at least on the Easy or Normal difficulty levels. In fact, the inclusion of difficulty settings and a rapid fire setting are also new. This is one of the biggest port improvements I can think of. My only complaints are your massive hitbox, and that there are only a couple of weapons. This really would've benefited from more content.

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

Levels are primarily a series of R-Type style environmental hazards. Don't position correctly and you're toast. Difficulty isn't as bad as the PCE version but still gets tough, especially when a level throws an obstacle that's basically impassable when you're in the mech form. You can't change at will so this makes for some cheap deaths, in my opinion.

Theme Score: 3

Theme Notes:

Feels like a mix between Gundam and R-Type. Much better presentation than the PCE version, but that's not saying much. Between levels all you get is a white screen. Forgettable but not offensive

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

Good sprites, especially your mech. The level backgrounds are interesting to look at. The game features a lot of slowdown when the screen gets full.

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

Eh, the music is ok but doesn't fit the sci-fi setting. Sounds aren't great and play constantly.

Overall Score: 65
