Heimdall for Sega CD

Heimdall

The low-down dirty Loki did it again

Genre: adventure - overhead

Publisher: JVC

Year: 1994

System: Sega CD

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

Interesting mix of isometric puzzle solving and D&D battle mechanics. The isometric areas control fine and the battles, while not my cup of tea, also play about like you'd expect for a game that was ported from PC. In other words, it would be infinitely better with a mouse and keyboard. Navigating museums with a d-pad is awful and saps any enjoyment from the experience.

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

I don't mind the island hopping setup, with each island featuring a small dungeon with a handful of puzzles. The puzzles are so obtuse that I quickly looked for a walkthrough and even then I struggled to understand what to do. Tutorials can be annoying, but for a game like this to not include one is criminal.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

This very European (read: authentic) telling of Norse mythology is refreshing after decades of American sensibilities being added. I love the concept of Gods trying to retrieve their relics on gold ole Midgard.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

The sprites look great, although the art style itself isn't appealing. It falls somewhere between Lost Vikings and Light Crusader. In other words, a bit too Western. Also, everything has a yellow tint.

Audio Score: 0

Audio Notes:

The sound of silence. The game is devoid of any music. Fine sounds effects, but they're jarring against the background of deafening silence.

Overall Score: 42
