Iga Ninden Gaio
Ninja Gaiden, if Ryu was a tankGenre: action - hack n slash
Publisher: Nihon Bussan
Year: 1993
System: PCE CD
Gameplay Score: 2
Gameplay Notes:
The slowest movement ever in a hack n slash. So painfully slow that you can't even jump over enemies. Instead you just slowly move to the right and mash attack to take out enemies who run into your blade. Two attacks - sword swing and a shuriken that requires holding down on attack, Mega Man X style. This attack is only useful for bosses who keep their distance. It takes too long to power up to be used against regular enemies. Ultimately this is just boring due to the horrible lack of speed. Hit detection is fine.
Level Design Score: 1
Level Design Notes:
Horrible. It's like a dumbed down Splatterhouse. Move to the right very slowly and mash II. Almost no platforming, except a few gaps here and there. Nothing vertical. Enemies aren't placed but rather spawn endlessly and randomly. Very little design went into this one.
Theme Score: 3
Theme Notes:
Ninjas! Between stage cutscenes, just like Ninja Gaiden. But it's in Japanese so I don't know what the story is. Enemies are standard Japanese horror stuff.
Art Style Score: 2
Art Style Notes:
Not that great, to be honest. The sprites are ok but lack much detail. Backgrounds are initially promising but only amount to the same tiles repeated endlessly for the duration of the stage.
Audio Score: 3
Audio Notes:
Low key traditional Japanese music. Minimal sound effects.
Overall Score: 38
