Mr Heli no Daibouken
Parodius meets Atomic Robo-KidGenre: shooter - horizontal
Publisher: Irem
Year: 1989
System: PCE
Gameplay Score: 3
Gameplay Notes:
A non auto scroller, like Atomic Robo-Kid or Fantasy Zone. But as you scroll the screen you can't go back. Power meter allows you to be hit several times. Enemies swarm constantly and have weird collision. Some don't even damage you or do so inconsistently. Two weapons - a standard show with a short reach and an upward missile while flying or bouncing ball bomb when landed on the ground. Yeah, you can land on the ground. In fact the walls and ceiling have collision as well and don't deal damage. So it's part platformer and part shooter. No auto fire, which is awful with two buttons to mash. The main gimmick is shooting blocks which contain money so you can buy health and powerups. I like the idea but Cotton and Lord of Thunder did this much better because the blocks here are annoying to destroy.
Level Design Score: 4
Level Design Notes:
Massive difficulty spikes show up out of nowhere. Seemingly impossible environmental hazards block your way and areas are either devoid of enemies or chock full of them. Still, I like the platformer design of the stages. Far more interesting than most shooters.
Theme Score: 4
Theme Notes:
Cute helicopter looks like the Parodius Vic Viper.
Art Style Score: 3
Art Style Notes:
Background are a disappointment. Cute sprites though.
Audio Score: 4
Audio Notes:
This is a stretch, but I enjoyed the music despite its use of not so great noises. They're well composed like most Irem titles. The sounds effects are more of a mixed bag.
