Nekketsu Koukou Dodgeball-bu - PC Bangai Hen
Genre: sports - dodgeball
Publisher: Naxat Soft
Year: 1990
System: PCE
Gameplay Score: 3
Gameplay Notes:
Remember Super Dodge Ball for the NES? That's this game. I enjoy it in very short segments but the lack of depth means I'm cooked after a couple of matches. Controls are simple - 2 to throw or catch, 1 to pass, and 1+2 to jump. Oh and double tap the d-pad to run. Knock out the other guys to win the match. Like I said, simple.
Level Design Score: 3
Level Design Notes:
Two modes - story and 2P vs. I'll bet this is way more fun as a multiplayer game. It feels a bit hollow as a 1P experience. The globetrotting story mode is a nice touch, especially since the court changes for each locale. That's the most interesting thing about the game's design - the cosmetics. The only other difference between stages is the amount of health that your opponents are given. I wish there was some team customization options.
Theme Score: 4
Theme Notes:
This is from the Kunio-un series, also known as River City Ransom. The story is told visually so there isn't much of a language barrier. I like the globetrotting story mode.
Art Style Score: 2
Art Style Notes:
As much as I like the Kunio characters, the sprites here are terrible. They don't look anything like the standard Kunio guys from RCR and other Kunio games. Instead, each team has a giant guy and a handful of tiny, not-cute squinty dudes. They're the pawns, if you will. Plus, animation is non existent. The only saving grace for the graphics are the fun and interesting backgrounds. Colors galore.
Audio Score: 3
Audio Notes:
I like the composition of the music but it sounds a bit distorted, like the speaker is sitting under a basket. Sounds are meh.
