New Zealand Story, The
The great, great granddaddy of Super Meat BoyGenre: action - gun
Publisher: Taito
Year: 1990
System: PCE
Gameplay Score: 1
Gameplay Notes:
Plays like a mix between Bubble Bobble, Mega Man, and Balloon Fight. Enemies spwan in routinely and can be killed in one hit (so are you) but many are riding on balloons or birds which permits them to fly. You can either pop their balloon or kill them and take it for yourself. Laggy controls, especially while flying. There's a good second of lag between starting or stopping movement. It's frankly unbearable and reason alone to avoid playing this game.
Level Design Score: 2
Level Design Notes:
In concept, I like the stage design, but it's hard to determine what's a platform and what will kill you. Also, many platforms can be jumped through, but not all. The goal is to reach your kiwi girlfriend after running through a gauntlet of enemies and obstacles. Now that I think of it, this is like the great, great granddaddy of Super Meat Boy.

Art Style Notes:
NES quality. Tons of sprites on screen, but it comes at the cost of crippling slowdown.
Audio Score: 1
Audio Notes:
This was the era of a droning song with only a few measure. This one is so grating that I muted it. Not the worst thing ever, but yeah, it's bad.
