RDF - Global Conflict

Tank controls suck even in a tank game

Genre: simulation - tank/mech

Publisher: Absolute

Year: 1994

System: Sega CD

Gameplay Score: 1

Gameplay Notes:

I really want to like this game. Honest I do. It's got a cool atmosphere and great graphics and sound and even some good gameplay elements. But it's not enough. Ultimately it's just a cumbersome tank sim with enemies that are damage sponges and are otherworldly elusive. It's tank warfare at its worst - with your lack of mobility thrust front and center. Such a shame.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

I like what the devs were going for, but I quite frankly couldn't beat the first level. Id like to score it higher but dialing up the difficulty so high limits what you'll ever see of the stages. A perfect map shows everything you need, although I do wish you could travel while the map was open. Objectives are clear and the minimal on the HUD is also well made.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

I love the over the top 'Murica theme. The long cutscenes get you amped up for each mission and the overall flag waving makes you want to enlist immediately. Yeah, it's cringey, but it's so bad it's good.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

Fantastic artwork and performance for the era. Looks as good or better than a lot of 32-bit titles. The sprite nimation is awful but the artwork itself is spot on.

Audio Score: 4

Audio Notes:

The audio is another highlight. Excellent sounds of tank fire, engine noise, and rockets. It's all loud and satisfying. Patriotic music perfectly compliments the setting.

Overall Score: 45
