Road Avenger for Sega CD

Road Avenger

The best FMV game, by far

Genre: fmv - n/a

Publisher: Renovation

Year: 1992

System: Sega CD

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

The final form of interactive movie...uh...interactivity. It's a series of QTEs, but you can straight up hold down on the button or direction without mashing or getting the timing just right (ala Dragon's Lair). Also, the game gives you enough time for even an old man like me to react in time. At least on Normal difficulty. Button presses come quickly and are intuitive for the most part. You can focus on the movie and know what you're supposed to do.

Level Design Score: 4

Level Design Notes:

The levels themselves are pretty crazy, in a good way, with a steady stream of memorable moments and set pieces. As I said earlier, what you need to do feels intuitive, which I think is a benefit of making an FMV title out of a dirving experience. Drivers know when and which direction to turn, after all. How is this the only driving FMV title?

Theme Score: 5

Theme Notes:

Mad Max as told by Don Bluth. The music and sound and awesome animation all adds up to an awesome atmosphere.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

Full screen! At least it looks close enough. They first person view allows the car's dash to act as a defacto HUD and there's a small black letterbox around the video, but it looks and feels so clean, especially when compared to its competition. The video quality is meh (Sega CD, am I right?) but the animation is top notch and sucks you in regardless.

Audio Score: 4

Audio Notes:

One of the best things about this game. Killer music and fantastic sound effects make the experience immersive.

Overall Score: 71
