Shape Shifter
Conan the MetroidvaniaGenre: adventure - platform
Publisher: TTI
Year: 1992
System: TG-16 CD
Gameplay Score: 3
Gameplay Notes:
Plays a lot like Cadash. Terrible platforming. Enemies swarm and fly in at odd angles that don't align with your limited moves. Attack with your weapon, obviously, but you can also crouch and kick. This is the main way to get rid of pesky enemies. Enemies hit lightly and every ten minutes your health is restored completely so you can wait it out if you get in trouble. Pretty weird. Choose from three weapons (axe, mace, bow) which can be upgraded twice, all within the first 15 mins of playing. Why did they even bother? Key gimmick are 5 animal transformations which open up new areas.
Level Design Score: 3
Level Design Notes:
Central hub. Only save from that town. Metroidvania structure. Platforming is poor and enemies swarm so jumping is always a gamble, but enemies stay dead within an area. Each new area has a distinct look and feel.
Theme Score: 4
Theme Notes:
Typical swords and magic fantasy setting, with monsters invading a previously peaceful realm.
Art Style Score: 2
Art Style Notes:
Looks cheap, like a DOS game. Minimal animation. Poor western artwork
Audio Score: 3
Audio Notes:
The music is a strange mix of Ultima and air guitar
Overall Score: 59
