Best of the Best: Championship Karate

Kumite Scoring System: The Game

Genre: fighting - 1v1

Publisher: ElctroBrain

Year: 1992

System: SNES

Gameplay Score: 1

Gameplay Notes:

As near as I can tell all buttons can initiative an attack. You hold one of the right directions on the d-pad and then press a button. Quickly becomes a button masher since the game rarely does what you tell it to do. Even when it does it's such a slow and grounded fight that the experience is incredibly boring. I guess it's supposed to be a simulation, but man is it boring. Also, the scoring system is confusing. I knocked down the opponent dozens of time but never took off any health. Took me a while to figure out that the traffic lights above the ring were actually a health meter. Just a boring game

Level Design Score: 0

Level Design Notes:

Every fight is identical.

Theme Score: 1

Theme Notes:

Karate matches aren't a dynamic source material

Art Style Score: 2

Art Style Notes:

Sprites are very detailed and well animated. However they're very small. There's only one arena so there's nothing to look at

Audio Score: 2

Audio Notes:

No music during the fights

Overall Score: 19

Review ID: 59
