Boxing: Legends Of The Ring for SNES

Image: MobyGames

Boxing: Legends Of The Ring

Big boys

Genre: fighting - boxing

Publisher: ElectroBrain

Year: 1993

System: SNES

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

Pretty good boxing sim. You've got all the punches like jabs, hooks, uppercuts. Y is your left hand and A is right. Holding Up makes you jab, left/right is hook, and down is uppercut. Block by holding up or down. Gameplay is simple but there's so much animation that happens quickly so it's hard to react. Pretty much just mash. Rounds last FOREVER which I guess is realistic. View is behind your fighter and slight askew to the right so you can see the opponent. Fairly immersive. Not my idea of fun tbh

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

Has a career mode where you level up your guy on a skill tree. Adds some replay value I suppose.

Theme Score: 2

Theme Notes:

Decent boxing motif. Definitely going for realism. The "let's get ready to rumble" guy is nice but he's way subdued. Glad he's here but disappointed he's so tame. How did the very well-animated fan service make it into this game? Were Nintendo censors retired by this point?

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

Pretty remarkable. ENORMOUS sprites animate incredibly well. Must be seen to be believed.

Audio Score: 4

Audio Notes:

Sounds as punishing as a real boxing match.
