Shining in the Darkness

The Genesis equivalent of Arcana

Genre: rpg - dungeon

Publisher: Sega

Year: 1991

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

It's a JRPG within a dungeon. Easy to use menus for the most part. Battles are snappy. In an hour of gameplay I never got past grinding with only one person in my party so I suspect this is a very grind heavy game.

Level Design Score: 1

Level Design Notes:

I despise dungeon crawlers. Get.out your paper and pencil to chart the map cuz this one doesn't give you any hints for where to go.

Theme Score: 3

Theme Notes:

All the tropes are here. You're a young swordsman. Your task is to rescue the princess and beat the evil bad guy (his name is Dark Soul). Your dad is an accomplished knight who is missing. Yadda yadda. Still, the JRPG setting is far more interesting than the typical blank slate in western RPGs. The story is told entirely thru first person interactions with NPCs. Very original.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

Lovely pixel art and sprites. All enemies and NPCs animate. Even walking through the dungeon feels more real due to the detailed art and a few frames of animation.

Audio Score: 4

Audio Notes:

Great soft tunes. Sounds are quite impressive, like the din of the tavern which is soft while outside but increases when you step inside. A lot of care went into the sound design.

Overall Score: 44
