Uncharted Waters: New Horizons for SNES
Review #663
Uncharted Waters: New Horizons
No. Not THAT New Horizons
Gameplay
Plays like a traditional JRPG in the sense that you wander around towns and talk to NPCs while being stressed from scripted event to scripted event. The tutorial lasted the full 30 minutes so I didn't get to play with the training wheels off. Overall I liked what I saw and want to see more.
Movement is very fast both in town and on the high seas. There's a map and no wind nonsense from the first game so not much to complain about.
Battles are very strange. You pick one of 6 attacks or defensive maneuvers in turn based fights but it's seemingly random whether you succeed in landing or avoiding hits. Enemies seem to hit harder than you and one defeat means game over.
Replayability is through the roof with 6 playable characters storylines to explore.
Build an armada of ships, recruit captains and mates for each ship, keep supplies stocked, earn cash by completing jobs. Kind of a prototypical rogue like survival game. More about inventory and stat management than about hit points and exp points.
Level Design
Amazing variety awaits. At least I assume it does.
Theme
I love the open world feel. 6 separate stories! This game feels huge.
Art Style
Very simple NES+ graphics. The framerate is way better than the original.
Audio
Perfectly pleasant music. I wouldn't mind hearing it during long play sessions
