Bike Daisuki! Hashiriya Kon: Rider's Spirits

Mario Kart with only three mushrooms

Genre: racing - vehicle combat

Publisher: Masaya

Year: 1994

System: SFC

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

It's Mario Kart, but with a few tweaks: - overly slippery movement - no R or L to jump or drift - no power-ups, at least none that you can use The last bullet is the kicker because although you can't get any power-ups, your opponents can attack you mercilessly. And when they do you'll lose 5 seconds or more which is devastating since entire laps are under 15 seconds. The only saving grace is that you have three nitro boosts, similar to a red mushroom from MK. It's not bad, but one of the lesser Mario clones on the system.

Level Design Score: 4

Level Design Notes:

Nothing wrong with the tracks. They're well designed, although the lack of jumps is another deficiency compared to MK and it's better clones.

Theme Score: 2

Theme Notes:

What a weird cast of characters. I'm not sure what to make of these S&M bikers. One guy even flips you the bird right on the title screen. Not thanks, I'll take Mario and friends over this lot.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

Really impressive graphics. The game uses a forced split screen like MK but rather than the map on the top screen you have your choice of rear view mirrors or a distracting, obnoxious camera that constants rotates around your racer. Do yourself a favor and never hit the Select button. Small complain here, but they put the playable area on the bottom rather than the top like all other kart games.

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

I enjoyed the music, although it doesn't match the theme. It's reminiscent of the beach tracks in MK, with a Caribbean steel drum vibe. This doesn't match with the biker gang roster or even the industrial looking tracks. Very odd choice. The sound effects are typical fare but are quite loud and annoying over time.

Overall Score: 66
