Asterix & Obelix
The quintessential European platformerGenre: action - platform
Publisher: Infogrames
Year: 1996
System: SNES PAL
Gameplay Score: 1
Gameplay Notes:
I believe this is the last Asterix game of the 16-bit era, so you'd think it would be a culmination of all the good the dev had learned over the years, but no, it's got terrible controls. Movement is slow, running is awkward, attacks have no range and enemies walk right on into your hitbox. It's everything wrong with European platformers from the 90s.
Level Design Score: 4
Level Design Notes:
What a shame! I love the level design on display here, but hate the gameplay. Stages have verticality, personality, multiple planes, variety and memorable moments. It's not top tier, but very good nonetheless.
Theme Score: 4
Theme Notes:
The Asterix universe has grown on me over the years. A short cutscene introduces the world and the varied locales of the game keep things interesting.
Art Style Score: 5
Art Style Notes:
Rounding up here, but the pixel art and backgrounds are so good that I have to praise them. I only wish there was more. A boss or something big and fun would've been the chef's kiss.
