Asterix
The Gaul of some people!Genre: action - platform
Publisher: Infogrames
Year: 1993
System: SNES PAL
Gameplay Score: 4
Gameplay Notes:
I'm rounding up on this one but I think it's better than many platformers out there. First, the cons: it's got slightly slippery controls, an attack with short reach, and only about 30% draw distance. However, the pros outweigh the cons. Your attack has a wide arch and generous hitbox, despite its short reach. Most combat can be avoided anyway, since enemies follow predetermined patterns without any reaction to your presence. Platforming works well and you have a walk or run by holding Y. This also give you a taller jump. The game looks and feels a lot like playing The Lost Vikings with only Erik the Swift. There are no boss battles, so again, combat is barely part of the game.
Level Design Score: 4
Level Design Notes:
Each stage is broken up into 5 or more short levels. The variety on display is admirable, with all the usual platform features as well as novel elements such as boars and birds you can ride on, hidden collectibles, and memorable set pieces like a boulder chase that would make Indiana Jones proud. There are a few problems with level design, like cheap enemy placement, small platforms, and leaps of faith, but these are the exception and not the rule.
Theme Score: 4
Theme Notes:
Silly, cartoony characters. NPCs that sometimes talk to you between stages. A colorful world without the 90's 'tude to ruin it.
Art Style Score: 3
Art Style Notes:
Clearly an early gen title. Sprites look fantastic but the backgrounds are lacking. I like the art style, but I'm rounding down because it's a clear step below the later-gen titles.
Audio Score: 4
Audio Notes:
Fun, sometimes off-key music. I debated on a 3 or 4 on this score, but I enjoyed the music and pleasant sound effects enough to raise the score.
