Bram Stoker's Dracula for Sega CD
Review #12014
Bram Stoker's Dracula
Batman Forever's Halloween friend
Gameplay
Completely different than the SNES/Genesis version. This version looks and plays like Batman Forever, with prerendered graphics and slow, cumbersome movement. It's very nearly unplayable. You move like you've got a load in your pants. Inch along to the right and punch or kick enemies the rush at you from difficult-to-determine levels. Many enemies drop in from above you, especially the bats and spiders, but you can't perform a jump punch or kick. You can't attack while in the air at all. It's a maddening experience.
Level Design
Horrible. The levels only require you to move to the right, but feature some of the worst platforming ever, and a never-ending swarm of enemies that are nearly impossible to deal with because of the horrible controls.
Theme
An FMV video of an old man sitting in an arm chair in front of a fire tells the story between stages. It's spooooky stuff, but makes me think of Garfield's Halloween special. A few seconds of poor quality FMV from the movie also plays between stages.
Art Style
These prerendered games have not aged well. This one is so dark and ugly that I can't stand looking at it. It's got prerendered backgrounds as well, which give the game a 2.5D look, but this works against it during the platforming sections because it's hard to tell where the platforms are. It looks like the floor is rotating in from a slight angle. Yuck
Audio
There's basically no music. Instead you only hear the bats and blowing wind and other spooky sound effects. It's like one of those terrible Halloween sounds tracks. No thanks.
